Castelvecchio, is the highest located village of Caldaro. It is above all a popular starting point for hikes, walks and other outdoor activities. Surrounded by mountains and forests, the romantic Rastenbach gorge is for example a very popular family-hiking destination.
Hiking Holidays
In Caldaro and surroundings, there are about 200 km of hiking trails throughout the landscape. Level of difficulty: easy to medium. Some examples are Mendola mountain, the Penegal, Roen or Macaion Mountain.
Cycling
Kaltern am See offers Bike Tours for all levels and abilities. Following the River Etsch along the valley bottom between Meran and Salurn is a very pleasant tour. One can enjoy paths through farmland and forests and even venture as far as Lake Garda. The area offers good tours to start off the mountain biking season as well as challenging trails.
Beach holiday
Lake Caldaro is not only the warmest lake for bathing in the Alps, but also one of the largest lakes in South Tyrol. There are a large number of leisure time activities that can be practised on lake Caldaro, including sailing, surfing and pedaloing and of course it is possible to rent the equipment.
Culture
Take a hike to the ruins of St. Peter's Basilica, to the Castelvecchio or to the Leuchtenburg.
In the most famous wine-growing area of South Tyrol the South Tyrol Wine Museum in Caldaro takes its visitors on a journey, providing information on the history and significance of wine and the work of winegrowers. A collection of objects of daily use of wine farmers, tools and pictures, casks, barrels, glasses is exhibited in this interesting museum.
